I get asked about my kit constantly. Here's a complete, honest rundown of everything that goes into my bag on a commercial shoot — including the unglamorous stuff like backup cards and gaffer tape.
On commercial shoots, redundancy is everything. You can't call a client back because a card failed or your only body died. I bring two bodies, duplicate card slots, and separate card readers for tethering.
1. Primary bodies
My primary shooter is the Sony Alpha A7 IV paired with the Canon EOS R5 as backup. Both shoot to dual card slots simultaneously. I've been shooting Sony for five years and the autofocus in challenging light conditions is in a different league.
“The best camera is the one you trust completely — because on a commercial set, there is no time to second-guess your gear.”
2. The lenses I actually use
I carry the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM, the 85mm f/1.4 GM, and the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM. The 35 and 85 are for portrait and hero shots. The zoom lives on the second body and handles documentary moments around the set.
